HIGHER ACHIEVEMENT | Washington, DC Alisa Lange, President of Design Products, Inc. is on the President’s Council of Higher Achievement-DC Metro - a non-profit organization that provides middle school children from underserved areas year-round academic enrichment programs and preparation for top high school placement. Higher Achievement is a champion of three principles: talent is everywhere, intellect is built through effort, and opportunities matter. Founded in 1975, Higher Achievement operates achievement centers that serve hundreds of students each year in Washington, DC, and Alexandria, VA, and in 2009, Higher Achievement will open its first Baltimore Achievement Center at full capacity. On November 4, 2009, Higher Achievement was presented an international award from First Lady, Michelle Obama, as a "Coming Up Taller" winner for excellence in education of underserved youth in arts and humanities. There were more than 400 nominees from across the world. The 7th grade scholar who accepted the award - despite strict rules to walk calmly across the stage, shake the First Lady's hand and only say "thank you"... sprinted across the stage and gave Michelle Obama a big hug. While posing for a photo with her, she leaned down and asked him, "What are you thinking?"... with an enormous grin on his face, he said "I'm just happy. Just so happy."
